Discover Kavaja

Kavaja is a city of around 80,000 people, about 27 km from Tirana, on the Adriatic coast. It offers sandy and rocky beaches, a long history from Illyrian and Roman times, and a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Use this site to explore attractions, history, and practical information including emergency numbers.

The city sits between the capital and the sea: close enough for a day trip from Tirana, but with its own character—historic centre, lively promenade (Shetitorja), and beaches like Golem and Mali i Robit within easy reach. Whether you come for the coast, the history, or the food, Kavaja is a practical and welcoming base for exploring western Albania.

Symbol of the city

Kulla e Sahatit — Kavaja

The clock tower of Kavaja stands in the historic centre as the city’s emblem. Built in the Ottoman period by Ibrahim Bey Alltun, it has kept its place as a meeting point and landmark and appears at the heart of the municipal coat of arms. A short walk from the main street (Shetitorja Indrit Cara), it’s an essential stop to feel the town’s identity. The tower and the surrounding bazaar area still reflect the town’s Ottoman-era role as a trading and administrative centre.

We spent a week between the beach and the old town. Golem was perfect for the kids, and the clock tower and bazaar area had a real atmosphere. Locals were very welcoming — we’ll be back.

Maria, visitor from Italy

Came for a day trip from Tirana and ended up staying three nights. The seafood on the main street was incredible, and Shkëmbi i Kavajas at sunset is something else. Already planning to return with friends.
